Causes:
A cold sore is a fluid-filled blister which usually appears
at the edge of the lips. Cold sores are caused by a
herpes simplex virus infection. Oral herpes is very
common. More than 60% of Americans have had a cold
sore, and almost 25% of those infected experience
recurrent outbreaks. Most of these persons became
infected before age 10. Anyone can become infected by
herpes virus and, once infected; the virus remains latent
for life. Cold sores are highly contagious and can be
easily spread to other parts of the body or to others
through kissing, touching, or secondary contact with
objects that have come in contact with a cold sore lesion
such as a shared eating utensil, drinking glass, lipstick
or washcloth.
